May Day
by Ally on Apr.29, 2010, under Uncategorized

So now April is tipping into May and I am gearing up for a show called TWIG at the Vitrine Gallery, London. Come along we can commiserate the results of the General Election together.
TWIG
A group exhibition with works by Ben Chambers, Benny Droscher, Justin Eagle, Katherine Gardner, Ally Mellor, Rennard Milner, Darren Norman, Linda Persson, Natasha Rees, Karen Tang and John Wallbank.
Curated by Alys Williams and Rennard Milner.
8th May – 13th June 2010. Preview Friday 7th May 2010 (6-9pm) - RSVP info@vitrinegallery.co.uk
The exhibition TWIG presents the work of eleven artists exploring how the Romantic dream of a correspondence with Nature might live on. In what way does our relationship with Nature now manifest itself? Do we question our dependence on it and in what ways can the exchange between Nature and Culture be translated through an artwork?
A tree, a branch, a twig, a leaf. At the surface of this leaf is where a transaction between Nature and us happens. Is there a place for us to be acknowledged at the receiving end of this? The pivot-point where wildness and understanding – the untamed and the civilized – meet.
These are questions approached in the works of the artists in this exhibition. From the confrontational tech-nature sculpture of Karen Tang to the quietness of human touch in Darren Norman’s modified branch. The mania of the tree roots in Ally Mellor’s photograph to the contemplative quality of Rennard Milner’s ‘Milk’. Nature seems to be communicating here on some unknown level. IS THERE SOMETHING WE SHOULD KNOW?

Then follows February
by Ally on Apr.29, 2010, under Uncategorized
Then came February and I was invited to take part in a show at HotYoga, Saskatoon, Canada. The title of the show was ‘wanderings’ so I sent over some new(ish) work and a letter regailing the story of some meteroites that came to be in my possession and also this really awesome quote : “So man’s insanity is heaven’s sense; and wandering from all mortal reason, man comes at last to that celestial thought, which, to reason, is absurd and frantic; and weal or woe, feels then uncompromised, indifferent as his God.” (Herman Melville, ‘Moby Dick)
The guys must have liked it because it ended up as the tagline of the exhibition. I shall upload pictures when I get them.
January
by Ally on Apr.29, 2010, under Uncategorized
Then came January and I was asked to show my work “Heolstor” with purge projects at the vulpes vulpes gallery as part of “Changing the Nature” in Clapton east London.
You can view a bit of press about it here
It was good to show “Heolstor” again, it was originally part of a series of works made to be viewed in diminishing light before the onset of total darkness.
Like the Innuit language has many words for snow Old English has many for darkness, “Heolstor” Means hiding place but is perhaps better known now as Heolstor.

March out already?
